Presentations
USS SLATER volunteers are proud to travel to other locations and educate others on Destroyer Escorts and the important role they played in history. We would be honored if you would host one of our volunteers and allow them to present to your group. Most presentations are around an hour in length, but all of them can be customized to fit your needs. There is a suggested donation to the museum for each presentation.
Contact Shanna to book a presentation! Listed below are the presentations we are currently offering:
Saving Slater
This presentation shares the history of USS SLATER and why she was chosen to become the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum. Stories will be shared about the history of Destroyer Escorts, SLATER’S involvement in WWII, her service in the Greek Navy, and her restoration transforming her into a world class museum. Presented by a SLATER volunteer you will get a first-hand look at the hard work that goes into keeping the “Old Girl” afloat.
Virtual Tour
We captured 360 degree photos of USS SLATER. Join us as a tour guide leads you around the ship and shares the stories of these “Tin Cans”. Our guide is with you live so you can still ask questions. Its the next best thing if you can’t climb the ladders or go below decks.
Destroyer Escorts of Taffy 3
In one of the most infamous naval battles of WWII, Destroyer Escorts faced the brute force of the Japanese Navy. DEs like the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS earned the title of the DE that fought like a battleship. Hear the stories and help us save the history of these Trim But Deadly ships.
Dazzle Camouflage
This presentation will be given to children and will focus on Camouflage: from Nature to Naval Warfare. We'll explore how nature utilizes camouflage to hide from predators or sneak up on prey. And how the Navy adapted this technique to Dazzle Camouflage their ships in WWI and WWII. After the lesson we will decorate our own ships with Dazzle Camouflage.
Capture of U-505
In June 1944 five Destroyer Escorts had a giant success in capturing German U-Boat 505. The capture was a huge development in the war, as the United States now had access to an Enigma Machine, acoustic torpedo, and submarine to study. Learn about the circumstances and importance of this event with a USS SLATER volunteer.
How Do Ships Float?
We’ll try to answer this age old question with some experimenting with what floats and what sinks and why. We’ll learn about buoyancy, density, and displacement and how they work together to keep giant ships seaworthy! Then, we will try and keep our own boats seaworthy.
