Overnight Camping
Aboard USS SLATER
When you step aboard USS SLATER you are actually stepping back in time. The ship was not designed as a tourist attraction, but as a warship. Every attempt has been made to restore her to original condition. The USS SLATER is the last floating example out of the 563 Destroyer Escorts that served the Navy in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. Her renovation since 1993 has been the result of over 250,000 volunteer hours and over two million dollars generously donated by Destroyer Escort Veterans and other interested citizens. We are pleased to offer this unique experience to your youth group and we ask that you respect the enormous effort that has gone into the ship’s restoration.

Frequently asked questions
on Overnight Camping
How do I book a SLATER overnight?
The first step to book an overnight is to get together with your group and decide on at least two dates that would work for you. Next, call our office (Monday – Saturday, 10-4) at 518-431-1943 to see if your dates are available.
Once we have decided on a date we will need you to return the Reservation Form and $100 non-refundable deposit. It is this deposit and form that officially reserves your date.
Three weeks prior to your overnight your final headcount, full payment, signed Authorization Forms, and liability insurance is due.
One week prior to your overnight the optional Dog Tag and Patch order forms are due.
2. How many people are needed to participate?
We require a minimum of 20 people, including children and adults. The maximum we can accommodate is 60 people.
3. I’m not in Cub/Boy/Girl Scouts. Can my group still participate?
Any organized group is welcome to book an overnight. The only stipulation is that your group will need to have their own liability insurance.
4. Can I book an overnight on a weeknight?
Sure! It’s no surprise the weekends fill up first. If your group wants to come on a weeknight or over a holiday weekend (i.e. Labor Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day) we welcome that! We are closed Easter and Thanksgiving Day.
5. What about food?
Dinner and breakfast are provided for your group by an offsite caterer. You will eat your meals on the mess deck aboard the ship. You are also encouraged to bring snacks should you want them throughout the evening.
6. What do we do during an overnight?
We keep your group busy. You will tour the ship, participate in an educational activity, retire and post the colors from the fantail, explore the ship on your own during free time, catch some shuteye by sleeping in berthing compartments, wake the next morning for breakfast in the mess deck.
7. What needs to be included on our Proof of Insurance?
In order for a group to participate in USS SLATER's Overnight Programming:
-All organizations will submit to SLATER a Certificate of Insurance for the scheduled Overnight.
-All Certificates of Insurance shall show that the organization has in force General Liability Insurance with a limit of not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate as well as sexual abuse-molestation coverage with a limit of $1,000,000 or more.
-All Certificates of Insurance shall include USS SLATER – Destroyer Escort Historical Museum as an additional insured on the General Liability.

A minimum of one (1) chaperone is required per eight (8) campers. Maximum group size is limited to fifty (50) participants. Minimum group size is twenty (20) participants.
